The Sound of the Stands

There’s always someone who gets there early. Someone wearing the same shirt they wore last weekend. Someone saving a seat for a friend who’s running late. Before the players walk out, the people in the stands have already made the day their own.

That’s the part of fútbol we keep coming back to. The songs you learn by standing next to somebody. A parent explaining the game to their kid. The stranger you hug after a late goal, even though you might never learn their name.

In Houston, people bring different histories to the same match. A club followed back home. A jersey passed down. A love for the game that moved with the family. You can support different teams and still understand what it means to give up your Saturday for ninety minutes.

And it isn’t always a celebration. There are quiet walks back to the car, missed chances replayed all week, and seasons that test your patience. You still check the next fixture. You still make plans to go.
